This week's guest was New York singer/songwriter/musician Melissa VanFleet. Melissa was absolutely one of the most engaging guests I have ever had - I could practically hear her smile throughout the interview and her energy is contagious. We talked about her September residency at The Hard Rock Cafe in Philadelphia where you can catch her every Wednesday throughout the month. We also discussed her nominations for the 2014 Artists in Music Awards and the fact that her hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is also the home of PEEPS. We also discussed Renman Music & Business and the impact it has had on her life and career. Click on their name to find out more about them.

Butterflies Radio IndieViews Artist Spotlight, featuring Dylan Lock - 9/2/13
This week's guest is the MSI: Hit List Winner for June, 2013. The singer/songwriter from Midland, Canada was a fabulous guest and I really enjoyed his insight into so many things. He also picked up his guitar and demonstrated live, during the interview, how he goes about songwriting.
Dylan is another of the very talented Canadian musicians I have had the privilege to speak with this past year. Dylan and I decided it was because Canadians have much longer winters that allow them more time to write and record.
He won the MSI: Hit List title with his song, Killer and Sin. I love the piano riff in the beginning. For me, it took me straight back to very happy memories. I immediately smiled and thought of The Haunted Mansion at Disney World and my favorite cartoon as a child, Scooby-Doo.

On this week's Butterflies Radio IndieViews Artist Spotlight, I talk to San Diego indie/singer/songwriter Josh Damigo. Josh heads out on his third U.S. tour August 30th, departing from his "house venue" - LeStat's West in San Diego. That is also where the tour will end. All the songs from the show are from Josh's album, 'Hope.'
We discuss the upcoming tour, the best breakfast food in the country and the embattled Mayor of San Diego. We also talk about the Butterflies Radio Staff visit to see Josh perform at LeStat's back in February, where he took us to the best burrito dealer in town and we left in a literal hail storm.

Butterflies Radio IndieViews Artist Spotlight, featuring Satellite Mind - 8/12/13
Tonight's show features Christian Dyer, lead singer for Satellite Mind out of Tucson, Arizona. I discovered Satellite Mind via Reverbnation when I was doing A & R for Butterflies Radio earlier this year. I loved their song, 'Cool Like You' so much that I downloaded it to my iTunes right after I heard it for the first time.
Although tonight's show was extended by 15 minutes, there were still things that didn't make it on the show.
Christian talked about how therapeautic songwriting is for him, saying he is Happy-Go-Lucky on the outside but can explore his Dark inside when writing. He also told me how challenging it can be writing darker, more introspective songs when he lives in a place where the sun always shines.

Butterflies Radio IndieViews Artist Spotlight, featuring The Paper Cranes - 8/5/13
The Paper Cranes are a six person folk band from Auckland, New Zealand. I interviewed Fraser and Naomi, who started The Paper Cranes as a duo before it evolved into the full band. Their 8 month old son dropped in for the interview and Naomi, who grew up in Japan, was sweet enough to play the Shakuhachi (Japanese flute) during the interview. I learned a lot about Japanese and New Zealand culture and music during the show.
I think you will find their folk music dreamy and relaxing and you will be hypnotized by the Shakuhachi.

When I heard "Gift" I knew right away I wanted Natalie Duke on the Butterflies Radio rotation. The song is completely honest in a way a lot of women wish they had the courage or balls to say. While it is a song about a guy that did her wrong, it still manages to be a song you will definitely want to sing-a-long to.

Michelle is a wicked Ukulele player. This show with Michelle inspired Rich Wildman, from MSI: Labs to throw out a challenge for all Ukulele players to submit their original "Ukulele" shred song. That came about because I said all Ukulele songs seemed to be happy and upbeat. I then said it would be cool to hear someone do a Metallica type song on the Uk.
