This week's guest is Kaila Picard, from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Kaila performs a unique style of music, which she describes as "Bohemian Disco," fusing disco, soul, pop and blues. She is also the band leader for an 8-piece band and used to be a synchronized swimmer. Kaila grew up in Montreal but moved to Toronto to study Jazz. She later discovered that the music scene in Toronto didn't match up to her style of music and returned to Montreal where she has found the perfect fit. On April 9th she will host an album launch party for her newest release, at Le Belmont sur le Boulevard in Montreal. If you would like to attend the event ($5 tickets), RSVP here. Kaila is not afraid to let her self-described quirky and slightly dorky persona shine throug her material and stage show. While studying jazz in Montreal, she dove into the city's nightlife. "I grew a bad girl edge, and that experience gave me soul, and a dark place to write from," she says on her Reverbnation profile.
This week’s guests are the duo of William Pilgrim & The
All Grows Up.
William Pilgrim is the alter-ego of Ishmael “Ish” Herring, who is
originally from Kansas City. He made his way to LA and put out a Craig’s List
ad, advertising his services as a singer. PM Romero, from Orange County, took
him up on his offer and the unique combination of blues, folk, and roots that
makes up William Pilgrim & The All Grows Up was born.
In addition to their music, the pair are outspoken about the
plight of the homeless in LA and are working on a documentary on the subject.
They also have a podcast called “Live From The Ice House” where they tell more
about the story of William Pilgrim & The All Grows Up, the journey Ish has
made from being one of the homeless in LA to the studio now. They showcase
local musicians from LA and discuss current events.
This week’s guest is Katie Cole. Katie is a native of
Melbourne, Australia but now calls Los Angeles home. She was voted Best Country
Artist and Artist of the Year for 2013 at the Artists in Music Awards. In 2012,
she was voted Best Rock Artist by the AIMA.
Katie leads a very hectic life and I was very grateful she
could take the time to give me an interview. I met Katie on the red carpet at
the AIMA’s on February 7, which were held the Key Club in Hollywood, but only had a few
seconds with her. I had also previously
done a print interview with Katie for Indie Music Bus.
During our interview we talked about what it was like for
her to perform this year at the Sundance Film Festival and her upcoming gigs at
South by Southwest.

This week’s guest is German native. Lukka, who is currently
living in New York City, after touring the world.
Classically trained before
teaching herself to play the guitar, Lukka released her first EP, “March
Playing” before touring the world in 2012. Her sound is heavily influenced by
60’s and 70’s bands like The Rolling Stones. Born just as The Berlin Wall came
down, Lukka learned to appreciate this music, which her father would purchase,
wrapped brown paper without knowing the music he would take home.
This week’s guest is Chicago singer/songwriter, Natalie
Duke, who was born in Nashville to a family already in the business. Natalie
began performing in commercials as a child. The family moved to Chicago, then
back to Nashville but Natalie knew where home for her, and her music was and
found her way to the windy city.
According to her Reverbnation bio: "Natalie Duke's voice can either break your heart or smash it. Her head voice soars with a plaintive tone so sweet you'll want to cry; until her chest voice smacks you in the face and tells you to stop being such a baby."
When I heard "Gift" I knew right away I wanted Natalie Duke on the Butterflies Radio rotation. The song is completely honest in a way a lot of women wish they had the courage or balls to say. While it is a song about a guy that did her wrong, it still manages to be a song you will definitely want to sing-a-long to.
This week’s guest is Poeina Suddarth, whose style has been described as subdued thrasher bluegrass. Classically trained, you will hear her sing Opera in some of her songs. She is also a costume designer and filmmaker who has a story or two to tell…
According to her Reverbnation bio: "With well over 200 original songs composed throughout her life, Poeina is always well armed and ready to take the stage with operatic presence, wearing reconstructed ball gowns, Japanese maple branches in her hair, and a sexually charged banshee wailing from her soul. She will roar and lament her trials and tribulations. Then with no less control whisper and laugh beautiful lullaby’s while running the gamut of tale-telling music."
